Germany's trade surplus expands in September, rises to 18.9 billion euros

FRANKFURT: Germany's trade surplus expanded in September as imports fell and exports grew, rising to 18.9 billion euros in September from 15.8 billion in August, data published by the federal statistics office showed Friday.

In seasonally adjusted terms, Germany exported goods worth 92.8 billion euros ($124 billion) in September, up from 91.2 billion euros in August, the Destatis office said in a statement.

Imports, on the other hand, declined to 73.9 billion euros from 75.4 billion euros. That meant the seasonally adjusted trade surplus -- the balance between imports and exports -- grew to 18.9 billion euros in September from the 15.8 billion euros recorded in August.

In unadjusted terms, the trade surplus also expanded, to 20.4 billion euros from 13.3 billion euros, as exports grew faster than imports, Destatis said.

Exports to the euro area rose by 4.4 percent on a 12-months basis in September, while exports to the European Union as a whole were up 5.4 percent and exports to the rest of the world rose by 1.2 percent, the statisticians said.
