Italy April Unemployment Rate Rises to New Record

ROME--Italy's unemployment rate hit an all-time high of 12% in April, official data from Istat showed Friday.

Unemployment in the euro zone's third largest economy rose to 3.83 million, up 0.7% from March and 373,000 people from the same month in 2012, according to the data.

The employment rate declined to 56% in April from 56.1% in March. Istat revised the March unemployment rate to 11.9% from a previous 11.5%.

Youths entering the job market are struggling to find jobs while older workers are keeping their jobs for longer due to tightened pension rules. The jobless rate for those aged 15 to 24 rose to 40.5%, a record high since the series began in 1977.

But it has to be noted that the number represents only 11% of the age group as most are studying or not looking for work.

In a separate quarterly survey, Italian unemployment in the first three months of 2013 rose to 12.8% in unadjusted terms, up 1.8 percentage points from the same period a year earlier, Istat said.
