LONDON – The ongoing sovereign debt crisis in the euro zone is the biggest threat to U.K. prosperity, U.K. foreign minister William Hague said Monday.
Hague told a financial services conference in London that "anemic growth" in the currency union and the "sense of uncertainty" created by the failure to finally resolve the debt crisis gripping the region has "serious implications for British jobs and growth."
Hague urged European leaders to deepen the European Union's single market and sign free trade deals with other nations to spur growth.
"Europe must conquer the instinct to turn inwards," he said at London's City Week conference.
Hague added the U.K.'s coalition government remains committed to promoting U.K. trade and investment abroad despite the myriad foreign policy challenges it faces. Economic objectives are central to U.K. foreign policy, he said.
Hague said the U.K. is aiming to boost the amount of trade it does with India and other major emerging nations.
